RoboCop (2014) Review

Image taken from www.imdb.com
The plot is somewhat similar to the original: an honest cop is turned into a half-man half machine law enforcer by a greedy corporation. In this case it feels more like an origin story, setting up the characters for future sequels. The themes explored include humanity, greed, media influence and family. The action is good but tone down compared to the 1987 version. It could be said that this is an unnecessary remake but there is no denying that effort was put in it.

Joel Kinnaman was an OK officer Murphy, struggling to accept his new condition. Michael Keaton, Samuel Jackson give solid performances but Gary Oldman steals the movie. He is great in almost every scene.

The updated designs are good. Not a fan of the human hand (I don't remember any in-movie explanation for this). Some designs felt like they were inspired by the Metal Gear Solid video game series

A remake should explore possibilities not present in the original work and this RoboCop kind of does that. While it lacks the soul, action and satire of the 1987 classic it manages to explore current social concerns making it a product of it's time (as the original). It is a good flick, the second or third best RoboCop movie.

Harold Ramis passed away

Writer, director and actor Harold Ramis died today from complications from autoimmune inflammatory vasculitis. For most people who grew up in the 80's, he is remembered as Egon Spengler from Ghostbusters. He also wrote and directed Caddyshack, National Lampoon's Vacation and Groundhog Day.

Thanks for all the laughs and memorable movies Mr. Ramis. Rest in Peace.

Behold... The Japarican!!!

This banner was located at Jinyas, an Asian restaurant in Puerto Rico. Loved this banner. It looks cheesy, ridiculous and downright epically awesome, but sadly it was taken off some weeks ago. Please Jinyas, bring it back.

The Guardians of the Galaxy trailer looks spectacular

I'm loving the tone of the trailer, plenty of comedy and action. Can't wait for the movie.

Cyclops is getting his own series!!!

Image taken from Newsarama
This May, Marvel launches a new ongoing series staring Cyclops, written  by Greg Rucka and art by Russell Dauterman. But there is a catch, it's the time displaced teenage version. The premise is really interesting, Cyclops and his dad (a space pirate) share some time together while traveling the universe and fighting aliens.

Cyclops is one of my all-time favorite comic books characters and is really great to have a series with him as the star but this feels like a maxi series more than an ongoing. Sooner or later the original X-Men will have to return back to their time, when this happens, will the series continue or be canceled?

I would have preferred a series following the adventures of the adult Cyclops, trying to regain the trust of fellow heroes. But never the less, I'll pick up the first issue next May. By the way, I love the design of Corsair's armor, looks like the one worn by Dracula in the 1992 movie.

There's the link to Greg Rucka's interview at Newsarama:

Whatever Happenet to original flavor Ruffles?

I went to at least 10 gas stations and supermarket and non of them had these chips in the small snack packs. They carry a lot (and I mean a LOT) of cheddar & sour flavor. Even vending machine carry the cheese one and even BBQ ones (yummy!!). But I really miss the original one even though it's really hard to find them. I'm glad they are not discontinued (at least according the Frito Lay website).
