Edge of Tomorrow Movie Review

It's like Groundhog Day with guns.
Based on the novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. Major William Cage (Tom Cruise), an officer who has no combat training, is send to a suicide mission against an alien race.  After being exposed to one of the invaders, Cage finds himself repeating the same day each time he is killed. With every time he experiences combat, his skills increase, but is not enough to win the battle. He seeks the help of Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt), a Special Forces warrior to help him repel the the aliens once and for all.

This movie is excellent, one of the best this year. Aliens invading Earth is something that has been done to death but this story feels fresh because of the characters and the inclusion of the re-spawn ability (something very common in video games). The were times were the movie brought memories of playing a really hard video game (like Ninja Gaiden or Castlevania for the NES), in which you die until you figure the enemy pattern.
I'm Tom Cruise and I play Bill Murray in this movie
The characters a very well develop. Tom Cruise knocks it out of the park. His character is such a coward at the beginning but as the movie progresses, he gains courage and is ready to sacrifice himself for the greater good. And the fact that sometimes Cage has to kill himself when something goes wrong and start all over again and try to achieve victory gives him a lot of depth. Emily Blunt plays a strong female soldier determined to end the war. They have a very interesting relationship since Cage knows Rita for a long time, but for Rita each day is the first day she knows him and is well developed thanks to the chemistry between the actors. Cage combat unit is fantastic, especially Bill Paxon (he should have appeared more).

I'll "rage quit" you if necessary
The constant replays of the same day are so well paced that never fell boring. The special effects and production designs are great. Love the power suits, they feel heavy and the Mimics move like a high speed octopus but in land. One little complain I have is the ending. I have not read the book (it's on the reading pile!) but I bet the ending was changed for the movie. It doesn't ruin the movie but something darker would have been better.

I know that Tom Cruise is a very polarizing figure, but give this one a shot (if it makes you feel better, he gets killed a lot).Try to watch it on theaters, highly recommended.
