Convergence: Speed Force #1

Classic Wally West is back, and he brought his kids for his latest (hopefully not last) adventure in this Convergence tie-in issue. In the story, Wally and the kids go to Gotham to investigate a strange energy signature. Suddenly, they are trapped in a dome and loose their powers. One year passes and Wally keeps trying to free the people trapped and return to his wife Linda when the events of Convergence begin.
While this issue serves to get us up to speed (ha!) to what happened to the West family up to this point, explains Telos crazy Thunderdome tournament (Tina Turner was busy) and sets up the conflict with Flashpoint Wonder Woman. It’s great to see him back as the Flash, since he was the star the title for almost 25 years. I haven’t read many stories that featured the twins but they seemed OK here. Sadly, Linda, Jay Garrick and other frequent cast members from his series are nowhere to be seen. Besides the Wests, the other star of the issue was Fastback (a cartoony turtle). At first I wasn’t thrilled by the idea of a turtle speedster but I can’t wait to see him and Wally team put against the Amazonian Despot. The art was good. The “realistic” look of the DC heroes blended well with the Looney Tunes-like world of Fastback and the rest of the amazing crew.

It would be awesome if DC brings back the whole Flash Family and cast (Wally, Linda, the twins, Bart as Impulse, Jay and Joan Garrick, Max Mercury, Jesse Quick, XS, John Fox, Iris West and Barry Allen of course). Throw Fastback in it too and it would be a fun title.

That was Convergence: Speed Force. A really fun read featuring the Flash of a generation. It is not necessary to read the main Convergence series to understand the story. If you are a fan of the Flash (especially Wally West), Pre-Flashpoint DCU or really weird comic book team-ups, pick this one up.
