Cyclops #5 Review

This series is a real treat. It has the main character (Cyclops) completely taken from his element. No X-Men, Jean, Professor X, timeline  (he’s from the past), in space and with his father (Corsair) who he though was dead.  Over the course of the previous issues, Greg Rucka showed us how different both characters are (Scott is insecure and uptight while Corsair is confident and lay back) but how much they need one another. This issue continues the father and son dynamic but also touches themes of loyalty and honor. I’ll try to keep the spoilers to a minimum.

Here lies the Kool-Aid Man.
Cyclops and Corsair are stuck on a alien planet and bounty hunters are searching for them. Corsair is running out of a special drug he needs to take to keep him alive. They make contact with the bounty hunters that are chasing they to escape the planet. Both characters shine in their own way. It is really nice seeing that Scott is a master tactician, even at that age. But the most interesting character (at least for me) in this issue was Savva an honorable being surrounded by bounty hunters. The art by Carmen Carnero is really good. Scott looks like a teenager. The alien planet and the creatures (bounty hunters included) designs are neat. The framing and facial expression were also well developed.
Not everyone loves the Colonel's original recipe.
Cyclops #5 was great for action lovers, but also has deep character moments. It is really interesting that Marvel is turning the young Cyclops into one of their Cosmic Characters. It’s a great opportunity to explore the character without the X-Men baggage. Truly a fun read.
